New Book Highlights the Breakdown of U.S. Healthcare

Female DoctorIn a damning new expose of the American healthcare system, Dr. Sandeep Jauhar discusses many of the alarming – yet all too familiar – problems plaguing doctors and patients today. Dr. Jauhar’s book, “Doctored: The Disillusionment of an American Physician” reveals the trend toward doctors as businessmen, rather than doctors as healers.

As the healthcare system involves exponentially more paperwork and doctors are increasingly hampered by bureaucratic idiosyncrasies, the quality of patient care declines.

This has prompted more patients to retain New York medical malpractice lawyers because of medical mistakes, pharmaceutical errors, missed diagnosis, and a slew of other medical errors.

A broken healthcare system

Dr. Jauhar’s new work explores many aspects of the failing healthcare system in America, including rising overhead and insurance costs, with increases in physicians’ salaries grinding to a halt. This cycle of declining profitability for hospitals and other practices prompt doctors to “milk” each appointment in an effort to obtain maximum compensation. Doctors spend only about eight to 10 minutes per patient, yet they often order needlessly expensive diagnostic tests and unnecessary medical procedures. With less time to examine the patient, review health histories, and evaluate symptoms, doctors rely more on test results that do not necessarily give the full picture of the patient’s problem.

Because doctors are more focused on insurance claims and accounts receivable, they have become disillusioned about their purpose as doctors, Dr. Jauhar’s book claims. And less time with patients often means that patients are sent home without accurate diagnoses or with an improper treatment plan. “After so many years in medicine, I am convinced of one thing: The vast majority of doctors aren’t bad. It is the system that makes us bad, makes us make mistakes,” writes Dr. Jauhar.

Victims of malpractice have legal rights

Despite the breakdown of the healthcare system in the U.S., patients still have legal rights. You have the right to receive an accepted standard of care, and if your doctor breaches that standard of care and causes harm to you or a family member, you have the right to explore legal recourse.

For example, if you feel your doctor rushed through your appointment and failed to diagnose a medical condition, you may be eligible to file a medical malpractice lawsuit. With the help of a medical malpractice lawyer, you could file a lawsuit on the basis of surgical mistakes, prescription errors, birth injuries, delayed diagnosis, failure to diagnose, and many other types of negligence.
